16. The First Crack

Sarthak's POV

The underworld had always known one truth—

Power never stayed unchallenged.

Kings rose. Kings fell. Blood rewrote hierarchies every decade.

But there was one name that had never faded.

Not whispered like a myth.

Not exaggerated like a story.

Spoken plainly. Carefully.

The Black Bird.

She wasn't a rumor.

She was real.

And the underworld obeyed her.

Sarthak Kapoor stood in his study, listening as his most trusted men spoke in low, controlled voices.

"How did the shipment vanish?" he asked.

Malik swallowed. "It didn't vanish. It was intercepted."

"By whom?"

A pause.

Then—quietly—
"Her."

The room stilled.

Sarthak didn't need clarification.

"The Black Bird," Malik continued. "No interference from rivals. No police involvement. Just... gone."

Sarthak's jaw tightened slightly. "Casualties?"

"None confirmed. But three intermediaries haven't been seen since."

That made it worse.

This wasn't aggression.

It was control.

Sarthak exhaled slowly. "She's expanding."

"Yes."

"And she didn't ask."

"No."

A faint smile touched Sarthak's lips—not amused, not angry.

Interested.

"She's smart," he said. "Anyone else would've announced themselves by now."

Malik nodded. "She doesn't announce. She decides."

Sarthak turned toward the wall map of territories.

"She's not challenging me," he murmured. "She's correcting the system."

That was dangerous.

Not because she was female.
Not because she was hidden.

But because she didn't need recognition to rule.

Later, alone in his private office, Sarthak reviewed classified intelligence reports.

Her network spanned cities. Borders. Governments.

No photos.

No recordings.

No confirmed sightings.

She didn't sit in meetings.
She didn't negotiate.

People adapted around her—or disappeared.

Sarthak closed the file.

"For someone unseen," he muttered, "you leave a heavy footprint."

He didn't fear her.

But he didn't underestimate her either.

That made her the most dangerous player on the board.

A woman who ruled without revealing herself wasn't hiding.

She was untouchable.

The drive home was quiet.

Too quiet.

When he entered the mansion, the lights were dimmed, the halls unusually calm.

And then he saw her.

Ishani sat near the window, curled into the couch, a book forgotten in her lap. The soft glow from the lamp painted her face in warm gold. No makeup. No jewelry. Just... her.

Unarmed. Unassuming.

Real.

"Still awake?" he asked.

She glanced up. "You're late."

"Work."

She nodded, not questioning him.

Sarthak poured himself a drink, eyes never leaving her.

"Do you know," he said casually, "there's a woman in this city who has men like me on edge?"

Ishani turned a page. "Men like you don't get nervous. You get irritated."

He smirked despite himself. "She doesn't play loud."

Ishani finally looked up. "The loud ones want attention. The quiet ones already have power."

Something flickered in his chest.

He studied her—really studied her—for the first time that night.

She didn't look like someone who belonged in his world.

Which made her... dangerous in a different way.

That night, Sarthak lay awake longer than usual.

Not because of enemies.

Because of questions.

He replayed the way Ishani had stood beside him at the office earlier that day. The way she hadn't flinched. The way she'd dismantled Khanna with calm precision.

Control.

Not learned.

Natural.

"She's adapting too fast," he thought.

And that bothered him more than the Black Bird ever could

Elsewhere in the city, panic spread.

A syndicate leader was found kneeling in his penthouse, alive—but stripped of every asset he owned.

No threats.

No signatures.

Just a reminder.

The Black Bird didn't need permission.

Back at the mansion, Ishani stood at the balcony later that night, the city stretching endlessly before her. The wind brushed against her face, carrying distant sirens and secrets.

Inside, Sarthak watched her from the shadows.

She didn't know he was there.

Or maybe she did.

"You're awake," she said softly, not turning.

"Couldn't sleep," he replied.

She nodded. "Me neither."

They stood in silence, the space between them charged with something unnamed.

For the first time in years, Sarthak Kapoor felt something dangerously unfamiliar.

Not desire.

Not anger.

Curiosity.

And curiosity, he knew, was the first crack in control.

Somewhere in the city, the underworld trembled.

And under the same sky—

Two rulers moved closer to collision.

Unaware that when the truth finally surfaced, it wouldn't just shatter empires.

It would burn hearts.
